Some nice views of the Alps and Rakia Gorge makes it quite interesting. Definitely the most scenic route to Geraldine from Christchurch and worth the extra time it takes if you are not in a hurry
The roads and scenery only become interesting after Geraldine. This is the quickest way to get there out of Christchurch. Main road can get busy so this is the quickest back road. Flat, straight and rather boring but if you get to Geraldine quickly you have more time to enjoy what lies ahead. Care needs to be taken in the shadows cast by the shelter belts as they can still be icy even at mid day
Twisty road of tight turns in places, can be crowded in places but still very good
Surely one of the best motorcycling roads anywhere? The combination of fjords, mountains, great views and the great road make this one of the best.
Steep climbs, ups and downs, dramatic changes in scenery and some great curves make this an excellent biking road.
A really great ride in summer. Our prefered route to Kaikoura even though it is a bit longer. A lot more fun after Mt Lyford. In winter and spring, the left over grit put down to combat the ice spoils the fun of the twisty bits.
Pleasant little sweeping stretch
Nice scenic route with good selection of straights and corners
