D900 Saint-Vincent-Les-Forts - Digne-les-Bains (off the route Napoleon )

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Az... > France > Europe
June 12, 2007 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.5

Another great road in the area, there are so many. This one runs from a road high above the shores of Lac de Serre Poncon (a bright blue lake) down to Digne which is half way up the Route Napoleon. This road has a lot of corners and you can really enjoy it without having to do silly speeds, its a real mix with open corners you can see round, blind right handers around rock faces, the lot. Near the top it climbs up over the hills then plunges down in to a valley with some superb bends. With virtually no traffic its a great road but be warned, one of our gang brought his bike and himself to a very abrupt halt against a craggy rock face. Three ribs and a scapula broken but hte bike was repairable with gaffer tape. Two days later he was on his ZX12 and rode the 800 miles home, respect or what.

Lorenzana - Montescudaio

Umbria/Toscana/Marche > Italy > Europe
November 23, 2009 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

Fanatastic road that is a joy to ride on any bike. This road has everything: hairpins, sweepers, straights, coutryside, cafes and great views. Its a bit bumpy in places but if you keep an eye out for the cracks in the road these can be easily spotted.

Staying High To Hwy 89 : Slagger - Macdoel

CA - DelNorte/Siskiyou/Mo... > California > United States > America
August 30, 2016 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

I discovered this road this summer nearly by accident. We were attempting to keep some altitude and stay out of the heat of the upper San Joaquin Valley and spotted this obscure road on Google maps. What a pleasant surprise! This might better be described as one of Americans \"lost highway\" but it's not really a highway. Leaving Macleod you are treated to some distant views of Mt Shasta. Most of this road traverses US Forest land with some open grazing so be on the look out for cows on or just off the road in some areas. Continuing on you are soon in the pines and the temp drops nicely until it connects to Hwy 89. Maybe the best part is if you see another car/truck or motorcyclist that will be one more than we saw. A real treat of a road in the heat of summer and it's all yours.

34 : Corvalis to Waldport & Coast via Alsea Hwy #34

OR - Clatsop/Tillamook/Co... > Oregon > United States > America
January 3, 2016 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

This is not an alpine mountain road, the kind I typically reserve for a \"very good\" rating but I'm giving it 4 stars to get your attention. If your headed to the coast anywhere near Corvalis you need to forget about Hwy 20 and take Hwy 34, the Alsea Highway road. Hwy 20 is the route preferred by tourists, RVs and trucks. Forget about it. Take the Alsea Hwy and you will be raving too. The road surface is excellent as it undulates while taking numerous turns through thickly forested terrain. Several times you'll find yourself in a tunnel of trees. There's nobody out there ... because they are all on 20! And when you get to the coast stop in for some chowder or fresh Dungeness crab! Enjoy!

US 50 : Carson City - Baker ( The loneliest road in America )

NV - Douglas/CarsonCity/C... > Nevada > United States > America
October 26, 2010 - 2 star route rating Motorcycle Road2.5

The loneliest road in America should be experienced by everyone once, if only to lose yourself and then find yourself again.

Artist Loop Drive - Death Valley

CA - Monterey/San Benito/... > California > United States > America
April 4, 2015 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

This "Artists Drive" is only a 10 mile loop but it is a "must do" if you're in Death Valley. If you can arrange it, do it in the late afternoon (the closer to sunset the better ) because the colors are amazing.

Take Badwater Rd south from Furnace Creek. You'll see a sign for Artist Drive but that's the exit -- it's a one-way road so continue south a few miles to the entrance.

After you've taken in Artist Palette lookout and start toward the exit you'll come to a very narrow little section of the road that twists back and forth traversing a very narrow canyon. It'll feel a bit like you're doing a bobsled run. Never seen anything like it -- maybe the most interesting mile of road I've ever ridden. I wanted to go back and do it again.

Badwater - Jubilee Pass : Pahrump

CA - Monterey/San Benito/... > California > United States > America
February 12, 2015 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

If you're in Death Valley you have to take a ride down Badwater Rd and over Jubilee Pass. We started into DV from Beatty. If you haven't done it already, you can take the Beatty Cutoff Road toward Furnace Creek/Hwy 190. Not far past Furnace Creek is the turn off to Badwater. At 285' below sea level, Badwater is the lowest point on the continent. At Badwater Basin the road starts a series of giant sweepers, one right after the other. Eventually, it turns east onto 178, Jubilee Pass. This is a great ride with nary a car or a human in sight for 40 miles. Road surface isn't super smooth but it's super grippy and plenty good enough. Jubilee terminates in Shoshone at 127 where you can turn north back into DV, exit south to I-15 or hook up to 178 into Pahrump and onto Vegas. There's gas and food in Furnace Creek and Shoshone.

Death Valley: Ridgecrest to Beatty

CA - San Luis Obispo/Kern... > California > United States > America
February 12, 2015 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0

Entering Death Valley from the west via Hwy 190 offers some of the most awe inspiring scenery on the planet with a motorcycle ride to match! I started this route in Ridgecrest and made a little jog up 9 MIle Canyon Road because if you're in the area this is not to be missed.

Heading east from 395, Hwy 190 runs flat across Owens Valley with the Sierras in your mirror and the Panamint Range up ahead. Across the valley the road turns south and begins to climb. Things get interesting right away, and it pretty much doesn't stop until you get off your bike in Beatty. Taking in the vistas, the thought that kept coming to mind was, \"how did this happen??\" Amazing.

The road surface is smooth with nary a pot hole or tar snake along the entire route but for a few miles coming into Stovepipe Wells. That was also amazing. The area is nearly completely absence of LEOs. Gas is sparse but not too bad with stations in Beatty, Pahrump and Furnace Creek. Keep it topped off just in case.

Also see my ride post on Beatty-Badwater-Jubilee Pass which is also a part of DV

US93 : Wickenburg - Kingman

AZ - Maricopa(inc. Phoeni... > Arizona > United States > America
December 7, 2014 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0

This is a good way to get into or out of Phx heading to/from I-40. It's a pretty straight shot but with sections of nice sweepers traversing several small canyons and a couple of cool new bridges. The attraction here is the scenery. Along the route you'll encounter nice vistas of mesas and a section of Hwy 93 designated the Joshua Tree Scenic Parkway.

US 191 : Vernal - Green River

UT - Summit/Wasatch/Dagge... > Utah > United States > America
May 21, 2006 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.7

Some nice switchbacks here and good (if a bit obscured) views.

Thermopolis-Riverton-Rawlins

WY - BigHorn/Washakie/She... > Wyoming > United States > America
November 29, 2014 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

This route traces another one of America's "Lost Highways" While there are areas with some nice sweepers it's more of a straight route over undulating terrain but this route is absolutely worth riding.

Moab to Monticello

AZ - Navajo/Apache > Arizona > United States > America
November 29, 2014 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

heading southbound from Moab to, say, Monument Valley? Take this little detour -- you won't be sorry. It's not long in terms of total miles or time but it's b-u-ti-full. And it's doubly so in the early October when the Aspens are turning. At one point you're treated to an amazing panorama looking back toward Canyonlands.

CO 318 NW Colorado

CO - Mesa/Delta/Montrose/... > Colorado > United States > America
November 29, 2014 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

This route needs a little explanation. First, I wish there was some rating between "pleasant" and spectacular because this route is much, much more than "pleasant." There's another caveat; at the CO/UT border 318 enters Utah and turns into a hard packed gravel/dirt road until it Ts into Hwy 191. Not to worry though; we were two up on a Gold Wing and two solo Harley Softails and we made it without incidence.

CO318 is one of the "Lost Highways" found on Butler Maps and indeed it is all that. While not spectacular in the Colorado River Way or Escalante Staircase sense, it is spectacular in it's desolation and remoteness. The vistas and sense of being in the proverbial "middle of nowhere" are awe inspiring and the road is a lot of fun to ride. Yes, it's slow going over the last section but it's worth every mile especially it when you find yourself on the Green River and Hwy 191.

Rawlins to Moran

WY - Albany/Platte/Goshen... > Wyoming > United States > America
May 27, 2013 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

I can hardly believe this route has not been indicated on BBR already!! If your westbound on 80 and looking to get up to Jackson, Yellowstone or Montana this is the way to go. From Rawlins youll climb up eventually leveling off upon a huge, expansive plain of rolling hills and distant mountains. On top youll encounter some nice benders with some up and down. Theres hardly anyone out there so somewhere out above Rawlins, when the vistas go on forever, pull over and take in grandeur. Its awesome. Along the way, Lander is a great little spot to stop for a meal. After Lander the road gets windier and the terrain more mountainous and dramatic as you climb. The condition of the road is mostly excellent. Enjoy!

Yellowstone East Entrance

WY - BigHorn/Washakie/She... > Wyoming > United States > America
May 21, 2013 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

Hwy 20. This is the East Entrance to Yellowstone beginning in historic Cody, WY terminating at the YS Grand Loop junction. Obviously this road can be ridden west to east but the scenery and fun factor builds better coming in from Cody. I dont recall a lot of services along the route so make sure you top off in Cody.

The scenery is great and the road spends a lot of time winding along the Shoshone River. A few miles after you enter the park the forest will open up to some wetlands on the south side of the road -- keep an eye open for grizzlies rooting around in the grass.

US93 : Missoula - Challis - Twin Falls

MT - Lincoln/Flathead/Gla... > Montana > United States > America
October 26, 2010 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

A very nice empty road that has many nice corners, takes in a national monument and is pretty well surfaced. Well worth a look.

Fenton - Byron - Laingsburg

MI - Cheboygan/PresqueIsl... > Michigan > United States > America
August 29, 2011 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

nice roads, pleasant drive, little traffic.

Devil's Tower : Moorcroft - Belle Fourche

SD - Harding/Butte/Perkin... > South Dakota > United States > America
August 29, 2011 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0

This is a nice way to get off the interstate and see some interesting back country including Devil's Tower which is one very interesting piece of geology. This road (34/24 and 14) rates a "good+" with a mixture of straights and sweepers with a few tighter sections just for fun. The number of tourists out to see DT explained why we encountered a couple of deputies on this section of road - detectors on!!

Mount Lemmon Highway : Tucson - Mount Lemmon

AZ - Graham/Greenlee/Coch... > Arizona > United States > America
October 28, 2010 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.8

One of the best roads in southern Arizona

US14 : Lead - Belle Fourche

SD - Harding/Butte/Perkin... > South Dakota > United States > America
August 28, 2011 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0

Wow! What a breakfast ride this was! Early morning, nary a car on the road. The scenery is spectacular and the riding sublime. We were getting the Wings leaned over plenty and scraping a lot of peg all the way through this canyon. If we didn't have more great riding ahead we'd have turned around and done it again. Lots of good riding in the Black Hills - this is one of the best!

US16 Ten Sleep Canyon / Cloud Peak Skyway : Buffalo - Woreland

WY - Campbell/Crook/Westo... > Wyoming > United States > America
August 28, 2011 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

This is an awesome piece of road. It's not Beartooth Pass but it's in the area and if you're heading to Cody you ought to get off the slab and hit Hwy 16. We hit this one riding west from the Black Hills. The surface is good, the curves are numerous and the scenery is great all through Big Horn National Park. the canyon at the west end is terrific! Highly recommended!

Apache Creek to Grants

NM - Catron/Socorro/Linco... > New Mexico > United States > America
July 3, 2011 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

This route borders on the exceptional and consists of NM State Highways 32, 36 and 117. From Apache Creek to Quemado the road climbs at a good clip with lots of nice twisties and sweepers. It flattens out at the top but there are enough sweepers to keep you focused - really sweet at 80mph. The vistas and rock formations are amazing. But perhaps the most "exceptional" thing about this route is how desolate it is out there. I passed one pickup from AC to Quemado and no vehicles from Quemado to Grants!! Coming the other way I saw maybe 5 cars/pickups over the entire distance - it's a very cool way to go if your traveling anywhere between, say, Silver City area and Taos!!

ID 51 / NV 255 : Wild Mustangs-Mt Home to Elko

ID - Nezperce/Lewis/idaho... > Idaho > United States > America
March 15, 2011 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0

Needing to make tracks from Idaho to Reno I discovered this very pleasant little route. Hwy 51 runs out of MH across the Snake River. It's desolate and mostly straight till you get to the border. There's a nice canyon carver there thru BLM land there with signs warning "Wild Mustang Crossing." Then right before Elko there's a great section of high speed sweepers. I liked 'em so much I turned around and rode them again! Nice surprise.
