A superb day's ride with coffee in Chatillon sur Seine and lunch in Dijon. The route travels through a number of beautiful villages, take care on the cobbles, has some good straight and some wonderful routes through woodland with many challenging corners. We lived to tell the tale without incident.
Rolling wooded countryside with a glorious twisty road through the middle. Avallon is a nice town to stop the night
A great road/motorway if you are on the way to Italy, really very beautiful scenery and a very scenic road, watch your speed in the tunnels, the swiss are pretty hot on speed limits.
Charming rural trip through Haut Beaujolais
Great variety of corners
Flowing and quite fast road through the countryside.
Great road to enjoy motorcycling and great local wine, who could ask for more?
Great rural ride through this pretty area, lots of good corners.
Nice twisty section with some good corners.
A hidden gem and a great way to get cross country without using the Mway. Lots of fast sweeping bends, great visibility and hardly any traffic. Watch out for dead snakes in the road, slippery little beggars!
A good east/west route between the Loire and Rhone valleys. Once out of Nevers and through Imphy (bypass under construction summer 08), the road opens out into an average rural French D road to Decize. Stop in Decize for refreshments by the canal or either of the 2 rivers (Aron & Loire). Your best to get onto the one way system and then cross the long bridge over the old dry river (signposted Moulins) for the town centre proper, shops and cafes. Alternatively carry on round to the left and out of town towards Autun.
The road from Decize opens out with fast straight sections between open bends. Theres a few crests and junctions between Fours and Luzy where you might be advised to stick to the speed limit but otherwise its a good surface and not very busy (unless theres a big race on at Magny Cours). Luzy to Autun is more of the same really, quick, quiet, uncomplicated French D-roads (ex N-road) with nice views of the Morvan National Park and Mont Beuvray to the left - plenty of local lanes lead off up into the hills if you fancy a detour.
A lovely and still largely unspoilt part of the world.
A nice flowing east/west route through the Bourgogne countryside, part of a good touring route linking the Loire and Rhone Valleys. Good surface with large sections resurfaced summer 2008, good visibility and pleasant views.
The best section is the last 2-3km approaching Chateau Chinon. An uphill section with smooth grippy surface and constant radius 90-180° corners. Stop in Chateau Chinon for refreshment, enjoy the view, then go back down the hill to do it all again! (beware, much heavier braking needed on the way down - its steeper than you think).
If you want to avoid some french motorway riding on the A5 and A31, then this road will not only avoid the toll booths but it will give you a gem of a road. I rode from Troyes, south on the N71, which was great, and turned off at Chatillon sur Seine and found this little beauty. It starts out as the D928 and becomes the D428, but you stay on the same road. It is 60k of pure heaven, I saw 3 cars in an hour, bliss. Lots of twisting bends, some good straights and all surrounded by lush undulating scenery. A road that I am glad I did not miss.
A really nice road, lots of medium bends, few nasty surprises. one of those roads where you get in to a nice rhythm, not a wide open race track but very interesting. A good way to get across the top of Dijon without going in to the city, pick up the Mway north east of the city.
This is a good section of road with wide sweeping bends and few surprises, though watch out for one bend with white lines across the carriageway, especially in the wet. It can get a bit busy, I've even been stuck behind a boat transporter! You can stop at Chateau Chinon or continue. Beware the surface on the hairpins West of Ch Chinon, the surface was terrible every time I've ridden it.
A good fast road, plenty of sweeping bends, couple of deceptive hairpins. A good way to get cross country without using the motorway Stay on the N71 for speed, take the D901 for a more scenic route with more corners, both good roads
Take the D977 from Nevers to Varzy, then the N151 between Varzy and Auxerre. A fast sweeping road, scenery not spectacular but a road you can cover ground quickly without getting bored. Watch for a couple of speed cameras, one at either end of this route.
